Notes on India: Ports are noted primarily to indicate where Europeans can place trading posts; they are either taken (with the owner noted) or still open. Some locations can support multiple trading posts, that will be noted. In order to establish a post, you need to negotiate with the relevant power (hence the list of nations), though the Mughal Empire is sufficiently fragmented and ineffective that outreach can be made to local governors if the Padishah is uncooperative. Useful maps for reference can be found here for the European settlements, here for an idea of general control in India, and here for South India beyond Mughal control.

Cochin and Carnatic Coasts

Summary: The Cochin and Carnatic Coasts (RL Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu) are controlled, essentially, by four rival dynasties outside of allegiance to any other Indian state: the Madurai Nayaks, the Tanjore Marathas, the Zamorin of Calicut, and the Kingdom of Quilon. They're all very minor states, and so for the simplicity of the game they have similar builds:

India in 1714

The Mughal Empire, after a rather dominant 17th century, has been in turmoil since the death of Aurangzeb in 1707. A series of Padishahs has rolled through the court at Delhi, one after another being deposed by this or that faction within the court. Most notably, however, the Maratha Confederacy has spent the last decade threatening Mughal rule and even going so far as to claim the Mughal throne. The war is essentially a stalemate, with the vast Mughals unable to direct their forces in earnest against the Marathas due to the constant threat of rebellion or invasion along the crumbling frontier, but the supremacy of the Mughals is now seriously under threat.

Meanwhile, in the South, the various states of the Cochin and Malabar coasts plot and seek to play the Europeans against one another. The traditionally dominants powers in the region, the Dutch and their clients in Cochin, are now seriously being threatened by the resurgence of English and Danish colonial efforts in the region--though the Dutch benefit from their substantial base on Ceylon. Further inland, the Rajas of Mysore look enviously towards the coasts and the wealth of the trade with the Europeans, as well as north towards the crumbling frontiers of the Mughal Empire.

In the early days of 1714, as the Commonwealth finally begins to establish some sense of control over their new holdings, they extend feelers to the Tanjore Marathas to seek permission for the establishment of another trading post, this time in the port of Nagapatam.

The Tanjore Marathas are thoroughly nonplussed, having not realized (or been consulted) on the transfer of power in Pondicherry from France to England. After hurried consultation, the Tanjore Marathas inform the English that their slight against them has been great: without paying the necessary tribute to the Raja, the English have taken control of land in his domain. This will not do.

However, the Chhatrapati is a merciful man. In return for the necessary gifts being made for the settlement at Pondicherry (1 point) the English will be allowed to continue to trade there. If they are so inclined to establish another trading post at Nagapatam, another gift (another 1 point) will be required--and, lest the English believe they have the rights to run amok in his domain, the protection force will be limited to 1 brigade at the new location.

The Mughals are willing to expand trade with the Ottomans through the establishment of a new trading house at Ahmedabad (they feel Lahore is far too inland to be profitable for either party). However, they are desperate for cannons and arms for their war against the Marathas and to guard their restless northwest frontier, and so require that the Ottomans make a gift of weapons (3 points) to the court in order for permission to be granted.

The Commonwealth diplomats are suitably thankful for the Chhatrapati's sense of mercy and justice and pledge that such gifts can and will be arranged at the soonest possible juncture in order to make up for the error made in making such a slight.

The Ottomans envoys response the arms will come by the end of the year.( In game terms, the Ottomans take a loan out to buy arms/cannons for Mughals in value of 3 points)

Following the war with Portugal, the purchase of Poland's India possessions has put the VOC in a position where it holds a near monopoly on trade with the Marathas (the VOC has a trading post in each Maratha port + controls Goa). Immediate efforts are made to strengthen relations with the Marathas. Marathan traders are assured of favored access to the VOC trade network extending east and a military exchange program is offered. Marathan officers are offered the opportunity to serve in VOC units and ships to gain experience, likewise the VOC offers experienced officers to serve as advisers for the Marathan military in an effort to deepen ties.

Separately, the former Polish trading post on the Hughli river in Mughal territory is sold to the Ottomans.
