Kingdom of Ireland - Page 3 Empty Re: Kingdom of Ireland

That the English election would result in a barely organized rabble representing multiple groups who struggle to form a working government is not surprising, nor is the righteous indignation by the landed Gentry in Ireland toward this uneducated mob.

Irish mockery and fears of the Commonwealth seem well-founded by how easily they become whipped into a frenzy against anything resembling a functioning representative body and respect toward a King as just and fair as James Stuart.

The massive size of the English navy is rightly feared by Ireland, even with their new ships joining the Irish fleet. Fears of another English occupation run abound, and more than a few old Tories who remember their days bushwacking NMA convoys lead effigy burnings of the dead Cromwell.

If the English wish to take advantage of the Irish and French prosecuting a common pirate to slaughter the innocent inhabitants of the Emerald Isle, they shall find a second conquest to be harder than Cromwell did. The Irish send diplomats to various intermediaries, making clear that the Irish will not start any conflict with the English, but will be sure to finish it.

As word trickles back to Ireland of the casualties suffered, Ireland taps the rest of it's capital available in 1716 in order to retrain units to fill in gaps, with additional war taxes raised (only .5 out of 1.35 raised thus far).

7 points in loans taken out (20 years, 7% interest)

Fall 1716
In light of the heavy Irish losses in the Indian Ocean and the likely need of the Irish for more frigates, the French government asks the Irish Crown if it is willing to take over payments of the 4 French frigates under construction in Charleston.

The Irish Crown gratefully accepts the French offer, beginning payments in 1717

The increasingly aggressive English posturing leaves the Irish increasingly worried over their situation. Even in the best of times the Irish were outnumbered on the high seas against the Commonwealth. Irish shipyards are bustling, repairing and producing new ships, in addition to the French contracts already in place. Ireland also begins training and arming new ground units in both the colonies and home island, in the event the English attempt a landing.

The beating of the war drums in England continues apace, while in Ireland opinion is divided. Mercantile interests are terrified at the prospect of the much larger English navy scouring the seas for Irish shipping and raiding Irish ports. The Court of King James is eerily quiet as reports filter across the water of the English warmongering. The Stuart advisers and parliament are sharply divided. Many of James' older advisers, those who remember the days when the Stuarts ruled the British Isles, pine for war with England. Many believe the commoners secretly wish for the return of a just monarch, and will aid in restoring the Stuarts to the throne. The "Restoration" faction, led by Charles Seymour eagerly awaits the start of hostilities. On the other hand, most of the King's younger and newer advisers have rallied against provoking England, for fear of what a war will mean to the overseas colonies. The mercantile faction, who pushed for the campaign against Henry Avery, is aware of the precarious position Ireland is in.

While the Irish Kingdom remains silent for the time being, observers notice that fortifications and ships are being built at a frantic pace...

WAR!

And thus I clothe my naked villainy
With odd old ends stol'n out of holy writ;
And seem a saint, when most I play the devil

With the declaration of War by the English, followed by the eventual reports of Irish defeat in the Indian Ocean, Parliament is thrown into utter turmoil. The "Imperial" faction of Parliament, led by Jonathon Swift and many of the Whigs, have seen their position thoroughly discredited. Thousands of brace Irishmen and numerous ships have been sent to their doom, while the English threat looms nearby. Swift and several other prominent MPs resign, others join the "Tories", who, led by Charles Seymour, have seen their power reach a zenith.

Irish diplomats scour the royal halls of Europe, desperately attempting to locate assistance in any means. Every ship and soldier available is deployed, as Ireland may well be fighting for its very life.

1718 begins with sizable chunks of Ulster under rebel control, and the knowledge that the English fleet continues to grow stronger, despite Irish action. However, despite the harsh realities of winter, hope blooms by the spring, with the entrance of the Spanish on the side of brave Ireland. Admiral Aylmer has successfully defeated the English fleet twice now, and the Orangemen rebels look ever closer to defeat. The Irish look to 1718 with the hope they can gain a decisive advantage over their foes and humble the republican foe.

“There’s daggers in men’s smiles. The near in blood, The nearer bloody.”

The mood of the Kingdom of Ireland abruptly shifts from the middle of spring to the beginning of summer from one of exuberance to one of grim resolve. The war will not end as swiftly or as easily as initially expected, and Dutch perfidy will allow the English to gain a decided upper hand over the Irish and Spanish on water.

The colonies dig in for the impending Dutch onslaught, while the rest of Ireland girds themselves for the grapple ahead.

After the signing of the Treaty of St Malo, the French Crown announces 5 points of direct aid to the Stuarts to repair their damaged fleet, and that the French Crown will assume the remainder of the 9.5 points in loans the Stuarts owe French banks beginning next year.

Kingdom of Ireland - Page 3 Empty Re: Kingdom of Ireland

Post by Haneastic Fri Apr 20, 2018 4:21 pm

With the end of hostilities, the Kingdom of Ireland breaths a collective sigh of relief. While early battles had gone in Ireland’s favor, the weight of the combined Dutch and English forces had begun to make the outcome of the war more uncertain, and the heavy casualties suffered on land and sea had begun to weigh on the Emerald Isle. Nevertheless, the success of the Irish Navy at Sea, and Marlborough’s battles against the Commonwealth, despite often being outnumbered, have boosted the nation’s morale, and sculpted new heroes.

At the same time, the war has taken a severe toll on the Irish Navy, and the colonial ports and commercial interests of the Kingdom have been badly hampered. Admiral Aylmer’s death is widely mourned, a massive ceremony being held in Dublin not long after the final peace is signed, attended by James III and thousands of nobles and peasants alike. Hard questions are asked by James about the preparedness of the Kingdom, including the failure to properly fortify Hampton, and the heavy losses suffered in Africa before the war. The overwhelming consensus of the royal court and parliament seems to be that Africa is no longer worth the investment required, and that Ireland should redouble its efforts in the Caribbean and America.

At Sea, the death of Aylmer necessitates the promotion of a new Commander-in-Chief of the Navy. John Norris is promoted to that post, having served with distinction throughout the war. While the Irish Navy has suffered body blows, the Irish Crown recognizes that they must match the Commonwealth Navy, and long term plans are drawn up to significantly expand the Royal Navy. On Land, while Marlborough has proven himself an adept commander, he is approaching the age of 70, and may not be available for the Royal Army come the next conflict. While Marlborough retains the title of Commander-in-Chief Command, his immediate subordinates are reorganized. Marlborough’s aide, William Cadogan, who was widely praised during the scottish campaign, is made Master-General of the Ordnance, and is widely considered to be next in line as command of the Royal Army. Patrick Sarsfield and James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde are promoted to Generals directly below Cadogan. Butler, who oversaw the mopping up operations in Ireland and Sarsfield, who led negotiations in France, are tasked with reorganizing the Irish Army and restoring order to Ulster. George Wade, meanwhile, is named to the overall command of the Irish Forces in North America, and is sent along with the light infantry regiment to the Virginia colony to restore order and oversee the colonies’ security.

Kingdom of Ireland - Page 3 Empty Re: Kingdom of Ireland

OOC: subject to change
IC:

The Postwar years of the 1720s see dramatic changes within the Kingdom of Ireland. On the Emerald Isle itself, the departure of hundreds of thousands of Protestant Orangemen and the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Scottish Jacobites throws the demographic balance into chaos. In Ulster and Leicester, a quarter of all Protestants depart, often leaving villages and whole sections of cities as ghost towns when entire extended families agree to depart. In their wake arrive over 400,000 Scotsmen from the Commonwealth.

The Kingdom of Ireland does its best to accommodate the changes and locate newly arrived Scotsmen in former Orangemen lands and homes, however given the massive number of arrivals and departures the process is often chaotic, and in more than a few towns the arrival of hardline Jacobites into towns still populated with Orangemen results in more than few riots and killings between 1721 and 1725. The net loss of subjects even with the Jacobite’s arrival in Ireland itself allows King James to reward many loyal subjects, and gifts former lands, homes, and shops to soldiers and sailors who fought during the War of Irish Salvation. These gifts are primarily bestowed upon two groups: poor common soldiers who had been noted for their bravery, and officers of the middle and upper class.

These poor often were granted land and farm animals sufficient to sustain themselves and an extended family, and had the effect of bringing many into an elevated status of relative comfort (as much as can be attained in the 18th century at least). The other class was of midrank officers who were rewarded for bravery or intelligence during battle. These men often received larger gifts of land, sufficient not only for an entire extended family but also additional property to sell or rent out to fellow soldiers. This group was received former shops, tools, and buildings vacated by Orangemen, and those with specialist skill (such as craftsmen) often could rapidly gain significant wealth by stepping into the void left by departing Protestants. The effect of the war was thus to create a new class of soldiers and sailors who had been able to achieve a comfortable setting for themselves.

In Ireland itself the war also has one final effect: it demographically changes Ireland from a nation where Catholics had a comfortable (but not overwhelming) majority, to one in which hey numbered three-quarters of the population.

In the Americas, the change is even more dramatic, as the postwar years see the overall population rise by two-thirds. The vast majority of this increase is due to a surge of Scottish immigrants, as well as the continued steady stream of the Irish from Ireland. Previously, the Crown Colonies had seen a relatively stagnant population of English (growing only by natural birth and the occasional immigration), with a steadily rising Irish Catholic population. Now however, while the population of English continues to stay stagnant and the Irish population explodes, a wave of Scottish immigration crashes upon the shores of America. The Scottish are often the most adventurous, pushing the boundaries of naturally settled areas in search of new territory to secure and settle. As such, the Crown Colonies slowly expand west, buoyed by thousands of new arrivals, while the cities fill with new settlers. This aggressive expansion threatens to upset the balance that exists between the settlers and natives however.

Royal Succession

Despite the stresses of war, King James and his wife are still able to be fruitful and multiply. Their first son, Charles Edward Stuart (1, B, Z) is born in 1720 to much fanfare, as the Crown now has a guaranteed line of succession. The birth of his brother, Henry Benedict Stuart (5, B, W) 2 years later is a more muted affair, due in no small part to the near-death of King James’ wife during the birth (rolled a 2). Her health issues with the childbirth result in no further pregnancies into 1725, and a few rumors swirl in the imperial court as to whether she is even able to conceive...

Ireland continues its expansion of the navy to make up for heavy losses in the Anglo-Irish War, as well as continued expansion in its merchant marine fleet due to the growth of Irish ports along the coast of their colonies. With settlers continuing to push west away from the Atlantic Ocean, Ireland moves to establish further trading links with Native tribes further west, setting up Fort Charles (RL Charleston WV) outside the Virginia colony in order to facilitate trade.

Dutch envoys in Ireland wish the new settlement of Fort Charles luck, however they note with some preoccupation that Irish settlements are creeping close to territory considered Dutch per the recently agreement with the French.

Ireland points out they were not party to the treaty at hand, however, dignitaries have been dispatched to hammer out a long term solution to create stable boundaries to prevent conflict.

A message is sent to the Irish government noting that the construction of fortifications at Hampton’s was expressly prohibited by the Saint Malo Treaty. News that Ireland has begun construction of fortifications in spite of the Treaty has come as somewhat of a shock in the Netherlands, especially given the amicable manner in which colonial border disputes have recently been solved to mutual benefit. An explanation is asked for, and it is hoped that construction plans where just an oversight.

The Irish point out that the treaty allows for the construction of defenses sufficient to protect Hampton from pirate assault. Given that pirates were able to destroy the fortress of Charleston, even a mere fortress isn't sufficient to guard against the scourge of piracy.

Nevertheless, the Irish will redirect the funds to Bermuda and postpone the construction of defenses around Hampton indefinitely.
