James is Dead, Long Live James!

On April 5, 1709, the increasingly feeble and sickly James II, the Restored King, dies after a bout of pneumonia. His son James Francis Edward Stuart, born a month before his fathers victory at the Boyne, has been almost entirely raised in Ireland, and represents in many ways a change from the old to the new as he takes the regnal name James III.

The death of James II is viewed dramatically differently across the Emerald Isle. In the predominantly Catholic and Irish territories, huge crowds of mourners turn out in town squares and churches to pray for the soul of James II and to the good fortune of James III. In Scottish, Puritan, and Presbyterian areas, his death is viewed with far more indifference, even bordering on joy in Protestant strongholds. Any outward expression other than sadness at the death of James today results in brawls near the pubs where they are most often expressed.

OOC: Subject to revisions

By 1710, the island of Ireland has been at (albeit sometimes restive) peace for more than a decade. The newly crowned King James III has ascended the throne at a time when Ireland has become a world power, despite sectarian and ethnic conflict in its homeland.

Economically, the increase in overseas colonies has brought increased opportunities for the homeland. The Irish ports of Cork, Dublin, and Belfast, bustle with imports of goods from North America and the Caribbean, and exports of finished goods, weapons, and metals for the Crown Colonies. The North American colonies especially are rich with timber and farmable land, which balances out the homeland, which has seen many of their forests depleted, and their homegrown food needed for the people of the island.

The abandonment of Ireland by many English landowners has allowed King James to reallocate many plots of land, and by the end of 1710, the ownership of land is roughly 60-40 in favor of the Catholics. Laws forbidding landlords from owning land in Ireland and residing in England has resulted in large plots of land available to return to former owners, and James is able to create goodwill by publicly returning several abandoned plots to the descendants of former Gaelic chiefs who had fled Ireland nearly 100 year prior. King James and Parliament also make attempts to crack down on the issue of absentee landlords, making symbolic gestures against egregious cases in the hopes it will prove to be an example against others. With ownership of land tied to being a citizen of Ireland, however, many of the worst owners have long been driven out. Smaller plots of land are doled out to heroes of the wars against the pirates and in liberating Ireland, in order to reduce the poverty many peasants have (and to build goodwill for the King).

Politically, Parliament has been under solid control by the “Tories” since the re-establishment of the Stuart Crown in Ireland. Tories comprise roughly 60% of Parliament, and are largely Irish and Catholic in nature, though English Anglicans comprise a sizable minority of the alliance, seeing which way the wind has blown on the island. In staunch opposition sit the Whigs, who comprise the other 40% of Parliament. Whigs are primarily Protestant and Scottish or English in nature, and have (begrudgingly) accepted the Catholic Stuart line. The classically liberal Whigs fight for the supremacy of Parliament over the King, and protectionism over free trade.

In the Americas, colonization continues at a rapid pace, as large numbers of settlers arrive for a variety of reasons. Scots-Irish settlers are frequently frontiersmen, traveling to the edge of the Crownlands, and setting up farms and estates on the outer edges of civilization. They act as a conduit between Native Americans and more established communities closer to the Atlantic, frequently trading goods back and forth. However, as they continue to encroach on Native land, small scale fights and battles break out, threatening to expand to something bigger.

Other ethnically English settlers who arrive are mostly those that have chosen to exchange their lands in Ireland for new property in the Crown colonies. Many find the land to be quite hospitable for farming and growing cash crops, and while initially there are only a small number of those that leave Ireland for America, as word returns back, the trickle of Protestant landowners turns into a stream.

Ethnically Irish and Catholic settlers are more divided. Many of those without old claims to property in Ireland wind up near the larger settlements of the new world, finding work as merchants, laborers, longshoreman, and other industrious jobs. As the ports of the new world swell with exports, imports, emigrants, and shipbuilding contracts, jobs are plentiful, and many peasants barely scraping by in Ireland find they can make an honest wage in the New World. Irish with claims to land in Ireland that were not resolved (ie the English landowners had stuck around) find themselves with opportunities for new holdings in Americas. While few accept the initial offer made in 1701, as word spreads of the good farmland, an increasing number with former claims in Ireland accept the offer made by the Crown. Catholic and Protestant farms tend to find laborers divide themselves by religion: Catholic farmers without land tend to gravitate toward leasing land Catholic landowners, as do Protestant farmers to Protestant landowners. This trend is supported by large landowners themselves, who typically send word back to their communities in Ireland about farming opportunities, which are often airly segregated.

As 1710 is rung in, Ireland faces a potential for increasing prosperity, provided that sectarian strife does not break out again.

Kingdom of Ireland - Page 2 Empty Re: Kingdom of Ireland

Early 1712

Representatives of the Jesuit Order, expelled first from England and now from France, publicly preach in the streets of Dublin and privately in the halls of the nobility for the Kings of Ireland to defend the Catholic faith. Standing side-by-side with the Knights Hospitalier, the Jesuits--an order unimplicated in any malfeasance other than to faithfully uphold the Will of Christ--are yet another victim of the French King's hubris and anti-Catholic tendencies. They point to the French King's consorting with anti-Christian elements, not just Protestants but even Jews, at the cost of Christ's Church, and demand that the Stuarts uphold their oaths and defend the True Faith. As often happens in Ireland, when similar processions are held in Ulster the Jesuits and the Knights are accosted by Protestant agitators, who mock their misfortune and throw up hearty cheers when the itinerant men religious use the word "Protestant" as a slur for the French King.

Kingdom of Ireland - Page 2 Empty Re: Kingdom of Ireland

Post by Haneastic Sun Jan 28, 2018 3:11 pm

With the war continuing to rage across Europe, the Irish Kingdom is more than happy to remain neutral. After delaying their departure to avoid miscommunication in 1712, King James orders the Irish troops in Jamaica to reinforce the colonies in North America. With increasing numbers of settlers continuing to encroach upon Indian lands, it will only be a matter of time before conflict erupts.

When word reaches the Stuart court about the actions by Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean, King James is said to be apoplectic. That the bandit Henry Avery is still at large and marauding after inflicting embarrassment upon the Irish Crown is simply unacceptable. While Ireland is in no place to immediately force the issue (and getting involved during the existing war is unappealing), the Kingdom must prepare to eventually bring Avery to justice once and for all.

Florida talks
As first part of the deal between Ireland and France that resulted in loans at a time of French need and transfer of funds as well, East Florida is transferred to Ireland, with the border being the 28th Parallel.

As the year 1713 draws to a close, France begins transfer of West Florida (Pensacola and Tallahassee) which includes the Fortress at Pensacola once an Irish Infantry battalion arrives to take over ownership

The French garrison (which will be an infantry battalion) will march to Mobile at that point to take up residence. French citizens, including Native Americans and Free Blacks, are welcome to move themselves and what property they wish to take with them with landgrants available anywhere in the Province of Louisiana they desire of 200 acres per adult male.

The Irish deploy several contingents of troops to garrison the new Irish holdings, ceremonially lowering French flags and raising Irish ones at the various settlements. The two portions of Florida are combined into one, to be administered as a separate colony from the Carolinas, although how and by who remains to be seen.

King James hosts the French for a series of feasts and meetings. While James is eager to become engaged, his advisers note that Princess Marie is so young, whereas James is 27, and the Irish Kingdom is eager to see him wed soon.

The Irish assent to the transaction. The shipyards of Charleston will be quite busy over the next few decades.

Post by Haneastic Sat Mar 03, 2018 10:30 am

At the end of 1715, the port city of Dublin is abuzz with activity. The four battleships under construction in the Dublin shipyards have been completed, and King James II himself has arrived to launch the ships into the ocean to display Irish power across the world. Dublin, however, is also filled with soldiers, regular troops summoned to the capital for the Royal announcement. Veterans of the battles of Jamaica and new recruits fill the pubs and barracks of the city, and more than a few drunken brawls between soldiers and locals have to be broken up.

At the launch of the largest and most powerful warship in the Irish Armada, the Mary of Modena (named after the mother of James II), King James issues his royal proclamation. Supported overwhelmingly by parliament, the Irish Kingdom declares that a state of war exists between them and the Sultanate of Zanzibar, for harboring the scoundrel Henry Avery, and by providing succor to the thieves, murderers, and rapists who accompanied him in the sack of Charleston. With the new warships finally ready after years of work, Avery and his ilk will finally be brought to justice.

The King of France is hailed as a true friend of the Crown. Using French ports of call will be most welcome to the Irish soldiers and sailors embarking on this quest, and if the French are interested in seeing the corsairs of Zanzibar receive their due punishment they will be most welcome to join the Irish expedition.

With the happy union concluded between the two dynasties, the Spanish ambassador to Ireland puts forth a proposal for a defensive alliance between Ireland and Spain, where one nation will come to the aid of the other in the case of undue aggression by anti-catholic powers, specifically England. Madrid indicates that it is ready to come to Dublin's aid if the English decide to take advantage of the Irish fleet being away in Africa.

With funds needed for the transportation of troops to Zanzibar, Irish banks are tapped to raise the necessary funds. Partial war taxes are enacted to pay the debt.

3 points in loans, 7% with 20 year repayment, .5 points of war taxes raised out of 1.35 capacity

As news of the degenerated so-called Parliament in occupied-Britain comes to Ireland, the Parliament of Ireland (properly constituted by, of, and for men of ability and stature, not a mere rabble) is thrown into an uproar. Numerous seats across the Sea have been filled by zealots hell-bent on further persecuting the good English and Scots who have not forgotten their allegiance to the House of Stuart or God's Church in Rome. That their rabble is built on lies is made clearly manifest by the unseating of men of honour who have been chosen by their constituents to go to London to fight for their true English privileges. The London Cabal deems illiterate raving lunatics proper to be called "Members of Parliament," but not good, Christian gentlemen!

Greater scrutiny is thus placed on the King's expedition against the Sultan of Zanzibar. The expedition remains broadly supported by the Parliament, as the dread pirate and brigand Avery must be brought to justice, but the scale of the response has left Ireland dangerously unprotected at a time of heightened instability (and, indeed, insanity) in Britain. English Grandees of the Tory Party, in particular, begin to beat the drums of Restoration once more, and are concerned that so much blood and treasure are being spent on something secondary to (what they view as) the core national interest: the destruction of the London Cabal. This call is being spearheaded in the Parliament by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, an avowed monarchist, who (in the contemporary style of seeking to echo classical writers) begins to end his speeches, dramatically, in the fashion of Cato the Elder:

Londinium delenda est
