Talks with the Barbary states
1784
John Adams, who negotiated in part the Treaty of Friendship between Morocco and the Continental Congress, continues exchanging letters with the Sultan of Morocco aiming to continue to improve ties and open further trade. This is also in part to safeguard Massachusetts ships sailing in that part of the world.

Mr. Adams' letters are received most graciously by the Moroccans, who state that their former permission granted to "American" ships certainly applies to those of Massachusetts. The enterprising Yankee traders are renowned in Morocco for their fine skills, and the Sultan is certainly inclined to allow them future access to the rich and bountiful ports of his lands.
