Mediatisation Treaty, 1796

In Spring 1796, Prussian Foreign Minister Christian Graf von Haugwitz and North German Confederation Plenipotentiary Karl August von Hardenburg travel to Vienna to meet with the Habsburg Court about the post-war order of the former Holy Roman Empire. To that end, the delegation proposes the following terms:

1. The Habsburg Monarchy will recognize disintegration of the Holy Roman Empire, and the existence and sovereignty of the North German Confederation.

2. The North German Confederation will recognize the right of the Habsburg Monarchy to set terms of Mediatisation in southern Germany, while the Habsburg Monarchy will recognize the same rights granted to the North German Confederation in its territory.

3. The borders of the two spheres will be set according to this map:



4. Seeking no ill will, the Habsburg Monarchy and the North German Confederation will sign agreements establishing commerce and friendly relations between the two entities.
