Barbary Raids of 1789
By early 1789
Reports of French, Spanish, and Italian shipping being attacked by Barbary raiders from Tunisia, Tripolitania, and Algiers are being report to their respective governments. It is noted that Morocco appears to be not joining in on the raids.
Impacts for 1790 build
France losses 1 shipping unit, that is captured by the raiders
Naples losses 1 shipping unit, that is captured by the raiders
Spain losses 1 shipping unit, that is captured by the raiders.
Local merchants demand their governments take actions against the vile raiders.

Only Napes is unlucky one for this round,

Spring 1790
The French mobilized their Mediterranean Fleet (Marseilles) to attack Algiers as means warning not to attack their shipping interest and their allies.
Meanwhile the Spanish fleet their frigate and brig fleets to assist in attacking the raider fleets.
French fleet
-1 BB1s (Tonnant)
-5 BB2s (Protecteur, Diadème, Glorieux, Zodiaque, Minotaure)
-4 Frigates (Souverain, Tigre, Jemappes, Argonaute)
-2 Brigs
Spanish fleet
Armada Atlántica
Cadiz
4 FF1 (Triunfo, Cornelia, Pomona, Ventura)
6 Brigs/PatRon
Armada Africana
Cartegna
6 FF1 (Juno, Palas, Astrea, Nuestra Seniora de la Soleda, Ceres, Minerva)
12 Brigs/PatRon
Counter raids by Franco-Spanish fleets
4 Shipping units are captured(2 from Algiers, 1 from Tunis, 1 from Tripoli)( France takes 2, Spain takes 2)
8 Barbary brigs are sunk by the Franco-Spanish fleets
2 Barbary frigates are sunk by the Franco-Spanish fleets
Battle of Algiers
May 5 1790
The French fleet soon arrived off the coast of Algiers, where they managed to intercept a Algerian raider squadron, compose of 4 frigates and 4 brigs, with 2 shipping units. The French fleet uses their superior firepower and training to overwhelm the Algerians and wipe them out with light damages.
French losses-None
Algerians-Fleet wipe out. 2 Shipping units captured by French
The French Admiral in command, realizes its not a good idea to shell the port of Algiers considering its protected by a old fortress without incurring heavy losses to his own fleet. He calls it day and returns home after crushing the Algerian fleet.
By the end of Spring, activity from Barbary states dies down, some say its message from the Ottoman Sultan telling them to stop. Others seem to believe it was the fact the Franco-Spanish fleet inflict such heavy losses on them, they force to them stop their raids for now...
