1793/1794

With the native tribes in the new territories largely crushed, the Colonial government turns to continue its economic development programs at the behest of Washington and Hamilton. Surveying and construction for canals and roads linking the Great Lakes to the Atlantic and roads from the major cities and ports to the new settlements in the Midwest continue. The Army of the West is kept mobilized to keep the peace and ships are constructed to replace older vessels but not major actions are taken.

Thomas Jefferson's appointment to ambassador as Franc causes infighting within the Legislature, as many there are suspicious of the radicals in France. Nevertheless Jefferson convinces the Legislature to "invest" in backing French war debt (10 points spent). While Washington is nervous about becoming involved in European affairs (despite the mother country's involvement), an alliance of pro-Revolutionaries and, pro-French, and those advocating for closer ties with England ensure the measure passes easily.

When word of the Spanish execution of a smuggler reaches the cities on the East Coast, there is a general wave of outrage. Only the most jingoistic demand any sort of action, but a wave of writing and political speeches against the Spanish hits the North American populace.

1794-1796 Builds

While wars rage in Europe, the North American colony sees peace and prosperity on its continent. The major Indian tribes have been defeated, the Spanish are far away from any major settlements, and the seas are dominated by the combined colonial and Royal Navies. The years of European wars see little changes in North American policy, as older ships are replaced at a constant pace, roads and canals are constructed, and explorers and adventurers travel West to reach the Pacific and map out the unknown western portion of the continent.

Colonial policy begins to shift, as several newer, larger fortifications are constructed to protect strategic areas of commerce and power, while for the first time standing troops are raised, in order to more proactively defend the colonial frontier against further native uprisings, or should it come to it, the Spanish. The military commanders in North America further begin plans to adjust the military defenses of the colony, reviewing older fortifications built for wars no longer likely, and plan to trim some of those over the coming years to reduce cost and manpower.
