Mid 1794

Convinced by Prussian agents, the leaders of Maratha confederacy and Mysore decide now is prefect time to raid British India Trading Company outpost as the Empire is busy focus in Europe. For now, they are focus on attacking outline trading posts and company stations.

Enraged, the Company sends word to London to send help to deal with this threat.

Due to the monsoonal winds coming from the north, reinforcements will not even leave South Africa until April 1794 and not arrive for a couple of months after that. In the interim, the Company military falls back to fortresses and waits for those.

Discussions begin in England (once word arrives) about settling the situation permanently and talks begin with Portugal toward a join Anglo-Portuguese regarding a joint campaign.

Winter 1795
Word of yet another Mysore War reaches Britain.   It catches the British government at a weak moment.   A massive war debt has already been accumulated, the war in Europe rages on, and frankly the income from Madras and southern India is not worth the expense of sending a massive army to to defend it.

Fierce debate erupts and inaction results.....

But gradually talk leads to simply abandoning southern India and letting the French or anyone else who wishes take over.   This of course leads to panic in the British East India Company offices and a crash in the stock price as investors look toward other avenues, like investments in North America (where the early steps of industrialization are occurring) or in the Fur Trade or South Africa (which has a friendly climate) or perhaps toward opening trade in Indochina.

Word is sent South Africa to not reinforce southern India but to support an evacuation should it be necessary.   The Lord Lieutenant of India will make that determination.

The Treaty of Maastricht changes the situation.  With the Dutch liberated (and thus a friendly ally to Britain), a working relationship with the French and peace with the Prussians and the Austrians being no real threat to British interests, the way is cleared to deal with Mysore.

The Southern Expeditionary Army: 3 infantry divisions, 1 cavalry division, 1 artillery battalion, 1 supply column, 1 engineer brigade, maintenance 6.5 points (based at Capetown)(consists of an Irish, Scottish and German/Dutch infantry division, remaining forces are English
commander Henry Luttrell, 2nd Earl of Carhampton https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Luttrell,_2nd_Earl_of_Carhampton (it being thought that any raping he does in India is not as big an issue)
and the Southern Fleet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Archibald_Dickson,_1st_Baronet
1 BB1 (Royal Sovereign) , 12 BB2 (Indefatigable, Illustrious, Bosworth, Minden, Royal Oak, Revenge, Achilles, Swiftsure, York, Wolverine, Saint Patrick, Ushant)  5 FF1 Durham, Worcester, Somerset, Cheshire, Cumbria

will depart Capetown April 15 and sail to Mangalore and seize that city https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Mangalore,+Karnataka,+India/Mysuru,+Karnataka,+India/@12.1751478,74.4732163,8z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x3ba35a4c37bf488f:0x827bbc7a74fcfe64!2m2!1d74.8559568!2d12.9141417!1m5!1m1!1s0x3baf70381d572ef9:0x2b89ece8c0f8396d!2m2!1d76.6393805!2d12.2958104!3e0

Portuguese forces will land behind it to take over occupation of the city (and its control).  The Anglo Portuguese Army will then build up supply and wait until the end of the Monsoon (wet) season before proceeding further.

additional British forces will depart  July 1 from Britain to take over responsibility and defense of Cape Colony (10 infantry regiments, 10 cavalry regiments) including the 33rd Infantry Regiment under Colonel Arthur Wellesley with this army under the command of General Percy, the Duke of Northumberland who will also take over as Royal Governor of Cape Colony.

Mysore front

Fall-Winter 1796
Anglo-Indian taskforce lands near Mangalore, they overwhelm the local defenders. The British commander Henry Luttrell enacts harsh policy of sacking/pillage to insure Mysore doesn't take up arms against the Crown or the Company. He proceeds to ransack the city and awaits for the Portuguese forces to arrived. Once they do, he orders the combined force to attack Mysore capital city and plans to raze. His aggressive tactics worried some members of his staff, they went along with it.

Winter 1796

The battle of Mysore was short but intense battle, the British-Portuguese forces shattered the Mysore army and effectively put a end to the Mysore threat to British/Portuguese interest in India. Once again Commander Luttrell enacts a policy of ransacking/pillage of the city.

British losses
2 Infantry Divisions reduced to 2 Infantry Brigades
1 Cavalry Division reduced to 1 Cavalry Brigade

Portuguese losses
2 Sepoy Infantry Divisions reduced to 2 Infantry Brigades

Mysore is shattered as military power and British take roughly 15 points worth of loot back to London. Portugese share was about 5 points worth of loot.

In wake of the Mysore defeat, the Maratha opt to offer status quo terms for peace and opt to cut their losses for now.

The Anglo Portuguese response is to demand that Mangalore be awarded to Portugal, and considerable territory to the Nizam of Hyderbad and right of trade within by Anglo Portuguese merchants in Mysore itself, as well as a reduction of the Mysore army to a mere regiment in size to guard the ruler.

The remaining nobility of Mysore agrees to the terms set forth by the Anglo-Portuguese.

proceeds from the war are used to make 2 infantry and 1 cavalry brigade into 3 garrison (Sepoy) divisions to garrison Mysore and the surrounding area for the time being. (cost 3 points). General Luttrell remains in command of the area as military governor

remainder of the Southern Expeditionary Army will sail back to peace time stations in South Africa as does the fleet next year when the winds allow
