It should be noted the Mississippi has several passes into the Gulf of Mexico, but they are all relatively shallow until dredging becomes possible in the 20th century

Based on the American Civil War Battle,  I would suggest that only CruRons and PatRons with their shallower draft than the larger BatRons can enter the river
