The Iroquiois Confederacy
Note: This map is the best I could find for this time period; all that they currently control are the regions labeled "1788, 1784, and 1796".

The People of the Long House
Summary: The Six Nations of the Iroquois (Mohawk, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca, Tuscarora) are formally bound together within the Iroquois Confederacy. Most of the confederacy (the Mohawk, the Cayuga, the Seneca, and the Onondaga) largely supported the British crown during the Revolution, as colonists from New York and Pennsylvania continually threatened their lands. However, the Oneida and Tuscarora had supported the revolutionaries, leading to a state of civil war within the Six Nations. At the conclusion of the conflict and the signing of the Treaty of Paris, the Iroquois recognized the need to, once again, join together to present a common unit for negotiations with the new American states. The central fireplace of the confederacy was re-established at Buffalo Creek, and the re-formed confederacy began to navigate this chaotic new space.

Re: The Iroquiois Confederacy
The State of New York dispatches messages and diplomatic forays to the Iroquois to begin attempts to define the very ill-defined border between the two polities. The New Yorkers are aware that they are now alone and cannot rely on the rest of the former colonies for support against the natives; their leverage is not as great as it once was.

The Iroquois note that they are perfectly content to continue relying on the Treaty of Ft. Stanwix Line to continue delineating the frontier between their lands and those of New York. They do, however, concede that the treaty left the northern frontier more nebulously defined, and indicate that they would be content with ceding all land north of the Oswego River and Lake Oswego to the state of New York.

The New Yorkers find this amenable.
