Re: Regno di Lombardia
The Iron Crown: Lombardy through 1725
Though technically on the losing side of the Lateran War, Victor Amadeus of Savoy was clearly one of the winners. The doubling in size of his territories and the elevation of his title to Kingdom has vaulted him into the clear 2nd-tier powers of the continent, and the Iron Crown of Lombardy is a prestigious prize. Even beyond that, his new kingdom of Lombardy’s economy is large enough to support a meaningfully expanded military and economy, including the incipient stages of a navy and the largest indigenous army on the peninsula.
The House of Savoy will not be sated with the addition of only Milan, however. The Austrians have expanded their role in the peninsula, and their allies have consolidated their powers in Northern Italy as well, but the Lombards are positioning themselves to continue to exploit great power conflict. Without their Austrian or Spanish patrons, the smaller independent states of Italy are ripe for conquest, and there are more than enough opportunities for both powers to be distracted by the affairs of Great Powers.
